Today, I want to do a comparison of Splice vs LoopCloud by Loopmasters. These are two really good pieces of sample management software and also sample libraries that have innovative designs to get your sample management easier. This article also covers a few other choices: Sounds.com and Arcade by Output.

Splice is really good for certain people, but based on the subscription model, I wouldn’t recommend it for people who don’t produce a lot of music. All right, that’s the summary.

The Differences Between Splice and LoopCloud

LoopCloud is hands down the winner for software. It manages your entire sample library — it categorizes samples in an incredibly intuitive database where you can search by instrument type, key, or tempo, and it adjusts key and tempo on the fly so everything fits with your song. This works with every sample you own, whether you downloaded it for free, bought it from Splice, or made it yourself.

The Splice app is fine — it manages the samples you download from Splice, lets you search by key, tempo, and instrument type. But it only does Splice samples, and doesn't have advanced search features or the ability to manipulate and remix samples.

Splice Has the Better Sample Library

The samples on Splice are the best in the business, with tons of exclusive, unique libraries. Splice has a vaster array of unique sounds — vocal chops, bubble sounds, 80 different whooshes, shattered glass, crazy trumpets. The quality on both Splice and Loopmasters is excellent, but there's simply more on Splice.

That said, it is much easier to find new sounds through LoopCloud — it has an AI that recommends similar sounds if you've found a sample you like but it's not quite right. You can also browse curated favorites folders created by top producers.

Pricing Differences

LoopCloud has a free version with nearly 100 free samples a day. For $7.99 a month, you get access to 100 on-demand samples a month plus more powerful software features.

Splice pricing starts at $4.99 a month for 200 downloads. Great if you're the type of producer who has an extensive sample library and just needs to fill in the blanks. Splice also lets you rent-to-own plugins — for example, Serum for $9.99/month with outright ownership after 19 months.

So is Splice the Best LoopCloud Alternative?

If you're still in the stage of building up your catalog, it's better value to buy full sample packs from LoopMasters or Sample Magic. Drop those into the free version of LoopCloud, have that manage your samples, and then consider a subscription once you know you need it.

Should You Download Splice or LoopCloud?

You have to get LoopCloud if you’re a musician making music these days. And I think a lot of producers also get something out of Splice just because of its vast library.

But it's not necessarily either/or! You could download the LoopCloud sample manager, buy the occasional sample from Loopmasters, while subscribing to Splice — and use LoopCloud to manage all your samples regardless of source.

LoopCloud and Splice aren't the only players in town. Sounds.com by Native Instruments and Arcade by Output offer interesting options as well.

Sounds features over a million samples from top producers like Diplo and Kid Capri, with Komplete Kontrol integration. At $9.99/month for 150 credits, it's arguably better value per sample than Splice — but if you don't need 150 samples a month, it can be more expensive.

Arcade vs. Splice

Arcade by Output is an instrument you use inside your DAW, with curated kits with built-in custom effects. At $10/month for unlimited kits, and any session you've built works forever even if you cancel. I'd personally recommend Splice over Arcade for raw content volume, though Arcade wins on unique-sounding instruments playable straight out of the box.
