Piano Keys Explained: Names, Layout & What Every Key Does
A standard piano has 88 keys: 52 white keys and 36 black keys, spanning 7 full octaves plus a few extra notes at each end.
But knowing the number is just the start. Understanding why a piano has 88 keys, what every key is called, and how the layout is organized will make you a significantly better musician — whether you play piano, produce music, or just want to understand the instrument you're writing for.
Why Do Pianos Have 88 Keys?
Pianos weren't always 88 keys. Early keyboard instruments ranged from 60 to 85 keys, and makers were still experimenting with the ideal range. It was Steinway who standardized 88 keys in the 1880s — not arbitrarily, but because it maps almost perfectly to the useful range of human hearing.
The 88-key span covers frequencies from 27.5Hz (the lowest A) to 4,186Hz (the highest C). Adding more keys above or below would serve almost no real repertoire. Modern composers occasionally write for extended-range instruments, but the 88-key piano is the standard for virtually all classical, jazz, pop, and production work.
Here's how different keyboard types compare:

| Keyboard Type | Keys |
|---|---|
| Standard upright or grand piano | 88 |
| Full-size digital piano | 88 |
| Full-size MIDI keyboard | 88 |
| Mid-size MIDI keyboard | 61 or 76 |
| Compact MIDI keyboard | 49 |
| Mini MIDI keyboard | 25 |
| Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand | 97 |
How Many White Keys Are on a Piano?
There are 52 white keys on a standard piano. Each white key represents a natural note: A, B, C, D, E, F, or G. That pattern of seven notes repeats across the entire keyboard, cycling through all seven octaves.
The anchor point is Middle C — the C note near the center of the keyboard, at approximately 262Hz. It's the standard reference point for reading sheet music, setting MIDI octave ranges, and orienting yourself on any keyboard.
Not all adjacent white keys are the same musical distance apart. Some are separated by a whole step (with a black key in between), while others are separated by a half step (no black key between them). That's why B–C and E–F have no black key between them — they're already a half step apart.
How Many Black Keys Are on a Piano?
There are 36 black keys. Black keys represent sharps and flats — the notes that fall between the natural notes. C# (C-sharp) and Db (D-flat), for instance, are the same pitch played on the same black key.
The black keys appear in a repeating pattern: groups of two, then three, alternating across the entire keyboard. This is one of the most useful orientation tools on any keyboard — when you see a group of two black keys, the white key immediately to the left is always C. Once you know that, you can find any note without counting from scratch.
How Many Octaves Does a Piano Have?
A standard piano has 7 full octaves, plus three extra keys at the low end (A0, Bb0, B0) and one extra C at the top.
An octave is the interval between one note and the next note of the same name — C to C, A to A. Notes an octave apart sound "the same" but higher or lower. Doubling a note's frequency raises it by exactly one octave: Middle C is 262Hz, the C above it is 524Hz, and the C above that is 1,048Hz.

A Brief History: Why the Piano Landed on 88
The piano was invented in the early 18th century by Bartolomeo Cristofori, an Italian instrument maker. His design replaced the plucking mechanism of the harpsichord with hammers striking strings, allowing musicians to control dynamics — hence the original name gravicembalo col piano e forte (harpsichord with soft and loud), eventually shortened to "piano."
Early pianos had far fewer keys. As composers pushed the instrument's boundaries — Beethoven famously demanded more range from piano makers — builders extended the keyboard. Steinway's standardization at 88 keys in the 1880s gave composers and performers a range that covered virtually all musical needs, and it's held ever since.

Piano Keys for Music Producers: What Range Do You Actually Need?
If you're producing music rather than performing classical piano, you almost certainly don't need 88 keys. Here's what actually matters:
For melody and chord writing: 49 keys (about 4 octaves) is sufficient for most genres. You can transpose MIDI in your DAW to reach any range you need.
For stock music composition: 61 keys gives you comfortable access to the mid and upper registers used most in cinematic, corporate, and pop writing. I've used a 61-key MIDI controller for Logic Pro in my home studio for years and found it more than enough for licensing work.
For bass lines: The lowest octaves of a piano (A0–C2) are rarely used in production. A synth bass covers that range more effectively. Don't buy 88 keys just for the low end.
Piano's frequency range in a mix:
- Low end (27Hz–200Hz): Bass and low-mids. Cut here to reduce muddiness in busy arrangements.
- Midrange (200Hz–2kHz): Body and presence — where the fundamental character of the piano lives.
- Highs (2kHz–4kHz+): Brightness, attack, and air. Boost carefully to add presence without harshness.

FAQ: Piano Keys Quick Reference
How many keys does a piano have?
A standard piano has 88 keys.
How many white keys are on a piano?
52 white keys, representing the natural notes A through G.
How many black keys are on a piano?
36 black keys, representing sharps and flats.
How many octaves does a piano have?
7 full octaves, plus a few extra notes at the low and high ends.
How many keys does a grand piano have?
Standard grand pianos have 88 keys. Some concert grands (like the Bösendorfer Imperial) have 92 or 97.
How many keys does a keyboard have?
MIDI keyboards come in 25, 49, 61, 76, or 88-key configurations. Digital pianos are typically 88 keys.
What is middle C on a piano?
Middle C is the C note near the center of the keyboard, at approximately 262Hz — the standard reference point for reading music and setting MIDI octave ranges.
Why are there black and white keys on a piano?
White keys represent natural notes (A–G); black keys represent the sharps and flats between them. The two-and-three grouping of black keys lets you orient yourself instantly on any keyboard.
